Brief Description:  This course will focus on the use of membranes in drinking water treatment.  This course will cover both low pressure membranes, including microfiltration and ultrafiltration, for particulate removal as well as high-pressure membranes such as reverse osmosis and nanofiltration for dissolved salt and hardness removal.  

Biography:  Paul Delphos is the Global Practice Manager for Water with Burns & McDonnell for the Mid-Atlantic Region has over 30 years of experience in the water and wastewater industry, including a large amount of project experience with advanced drinking water technologies (membranes, desalination, GAC, etc.) including over 40 different facilities totaling more than 800-mgd and serving on Value Engineering teams for NYC DEP.  Further, he recently served as a Deputy Program Manager for 100-mgd Hampton Roads Sanitation District Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow (SWIFT) advanced water treatment and groundwater recharge program.  He is also lead editor and co-author for AWWA M53, Microfiltration and Ultrafiltration for Drinking Water and AWWA M46, Reverse Osmosis and Nanofiltration.

This operations-oriented presentation focuses on the practical application, background, and regulations for disinfection of distribution system components, including waterlines and storage tanks. We’ll work through several example situations, discuss waterline break types and responses, and take some short excursions to address CT, DBPs, and optimization. “You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll kiss 3 hours goodbye” 

David Dawson - David works in the VDH Office of Drinking Water as Abingdon Field Office Deputy Director, providing technical assistance and engineering evaluation/support. During 42 years in water/wastewater, David has served as a public utility general manager, water quality manager, wastewater operations manager, and wastewater operator. He has also worked as an engineering/managerial consultant, and performed environmental engineering research in industry and academia.  David chairs the Virginia Optimization Program Committee and frequently provides continuing education presentations.

Lisa Crabtree - Lisa is a District Engineer with the Virginia Department of Health Office of Drinking Water (VDH-ODW), Abingdon Field Office. Lisa also coordinates regulatory documentation and IT support for the Abingdon Field Office, and has been recognized for the excellent quality of her continuing education presentations for the drinking water community.  Lisa has over 20 years environmental compliance, overseeing air, water, and waste operations for more than 20 chemical and building material production facilities located in several countries. In addition, Lisa directed regulatory compliance for a paper mill and also managed regulatory and safety compliance for facilities of an international food processing corporation.  Lisa is a Certified Safety Professional and holds a BS degree in Physics and Math from Emory & Henry College, and a MS degree in Environmental Engineering from Middle Tennessee State University. 

Brianna Cornett - Brianna is a graduate of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Physical Education. She also holds a Masters in Environmental Health from The University of St. Francis. She has worked in the water and wastewater profession for nearly 10 years. She began her career working for a research and development water treatment company where she conducted water /wastewater quality testing, environmental research and assisted operations in deploying pilot projects in Southwest Virginia. In addition, she has worked at local health departments in Southwest Virginia regulating the design and installation of private wells and onsite wastewater systems. She began working with the Office of Drinking Water in March 2023 as an Environmental Health Specialist, Sr. where she currently inspects groundwater and consecutive systems in the Abingdon Field Office region.

Bill Knocke - Dr. William R. Knocke is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech, where he has been a faculty member for 42 years.  Dr. Knocke teaches multiple courses at Virginia Tech related to the various chemical and physical processes employed in drinking water treatment facilities.  He has likewise served as a professional consultant to a large number of water utilities on ways to improve water treatment operations, with a primary focus on enhancing iron and manganese removal methods.  Dr. Knocke has authored or co-authored over one hundred publications focused on water treatment techniques.
