Course 1 – Fundamental Topics for Asset Management

In many communities, assets are increasingly stressed from over-use, under-funding, and aging. Public sector managers have been managing assets for decades. However, it is becoming clear that what we have been doing in the past will not be sufficient to address the growing and increasingly complex challenges that lie ahead. Practical, advanced techniques for better managing physical assets have been developed and refined over the past several decades around the world. These techniques - a blend of processes and practices - have been slowly integrated into a holistic management framework over the past two decades.

This course provides an understanding of the existing frameworks available for establishing an asset management program and creates a foundation for successive modules to follow.

In this course, you will learn

  • The basics of current Asset Management Program Frameworks and Standards
  • How to employ Asset Management as a business process improvement
  • The history of the development of AM practices in the US water industry
  • How to develop and populate the asset registry using an asset hierarchy and data standards
  • Assess the condition of assets and linking decay curve with Condition Assessment
  • How to estimate Business Risk Exposure and what mitigation strategies are available for asset management
  • How to formulate core Operations and Maintenance strategies including predictive, preventative and corrective maintenance
