About the Area

Blacksburg is located in the Ridge and Valley Region of Virginia near the Appalachian Trail where unique recreational adventures abound. This includes the Jefferson National Forest which is home to tumbling waterfalls, rare wildflowers, vividly colored hills, and Virginia's highest peak (Mount Rogers). The Jefferson National Forest spreads 690,000 acres of hardwood and conifer forests. The surrounding New River Valley is filled with beautiful and historic locations to hike, bike, swim, and explore. Venturing out in the surrounding natural beauty is highly encouraged.

Local area attractions:

The Cascades Hiking Trail - A 66-foot waterfall within Jefferson National Forest. The hike is a 4 mile round-trip and is low to moderate difficulty.

Pandapas Pond - An 8-acre pond located very near Blacksburg. It features warm-water fishing and canoeing. There is a one-mile circuit trail that goes around the pond. Many Jefferson National Forest trails connect to it.

Blue Ridge Parkway - Mountain meadows, split-rail fences, old farmsteads, and scenic overlooks with endless vistas make the Blue Ridge Parkway a popular attraction.

Jefferson National Forest - The George Washington and Jefferson National Forests stretch along the beautiful Appalachian Mountains of Virginia.  Whether its hiking, horseback riding, or mountain biking, the forests have something for you to enjoy.

McAfee Knob Hike - McAfee’s Knob is the most photographed location on the Appalachian Trail. The Knob has a 260 panorama view of Catawba Valley and North Mountain to the West, Tinker Cliffs to the North and the Roanoke Valley to the East. It is a steady climb of 4.4 miles to the Knob.

Mountain Lake Conservancy - Mountain Lake Lodge is the ideal place for families, friends, couples and groups to recreate and relax amidst nature’s bounty. Enjoy hiking, biking, tennis, wagon rides, outdoor recreation, and family entertainment Mountain Lake.

Claytor Lake State Park - An ideal setting for boating, swimming, camping, hiking and picnicking.

Hahn Horticulture Garden - The Hahn Horticulture Garden encompasses nearly six acres of teaching and display gardens on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Huckleberry Trail - A 6-mile trail that stretches from Blacksburg to Christiansburg. This trail is great for running, walking and biking.
