VAILL 2016 will be held at The Festival Conference and Student Center at James Madison University, located in Harrisonburg, Virginia. James Madison University is located in the Shenandoah Valley and offers a wide variety of attractions year-round.
If you are driving to VAILL, you will see signs directing you to the conference location once you have exited Interstate 81 (use Exit 245). Follow the signs, which will direct you to the parking lot located across from the Festival Conference and Student Center. You will see the VAILL registration desk as you enter through the Festival Conference and Student Center main entrance. The VAILL registration desk will open at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 27. When you register, you will receive a conference program, conference tote, and conference materials.
If you requested a dorm room, you will be given an electronic residence hall card that will serve as your meal card and your dorm room key. There is a drop-off loop that runs in front of the Chesapeake Residence Hall where you may load and unload your luggage. To keep the drop-off loop as free as possible, please keep the time for loading and unloading in front of the dorm to a minimum.
Please note: JMU conference staff has requested that conference participants not park their vehicles in the loop that runs in front of the Festival Conference and Student Center. The Festival Conference and Student Center Loop is different from the drop-off loop that runs in front of the residence hall. Any cars parked in the Festival Loop will be subject to ticketing and/or towing by JMU parking services.
All VAILL participants and presenters may park in the commuter student parking lot, C12, located across from the JMU Festival Conference and Student Center. Anyone not authorized to park in a space outside of parking lot C12 will be subject to ticketing and/or towing by JMU parking services.
If you require handicap parking, you must obtain a JMU-issued handicap parking permit, which you can obtain by showing a government-issued handicap parking permit when registering. The JMU-issued handicap permit will also allow you to park in the handicap parking spaces located near the drop-off loop that runs in front of the residence hall. Anyone parking in a handicap parking spot without a JMU-issued handicap parking permit will be subject to ticketing and/or towing by JMU parking services.
Please do not park or stand in the loop running in front of the Festival Conference and Student Center.
All VAILL participants and presenters will be issued a JMU meal card that provides the holder with access to the East Campus Dining Hall, or E-Hall, located directly across from the Chesapeake residence hall. Meal card holders will be permitted access to E-Hall during the following dining hall hours.
East Campus Dining Hall Hours:
Breakfast: 7 - 9 a.m.
Lunch: 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Dinner: 4:30 p.m. - 7 p.m. (must arrive at dining hall by 6:30 p.m.)
E-Hall provides all-you-care-to-eat resident dining. Breakfast offers include made-to-order omelets, breakfast meats, breads, fresh fruit, and cereals. Lunch and dinner options include brick oven pizza, home-style entrees, deli selections, international dishes, and pastries and desserts baked on the spot. Vegetarian and vegan options and selections made with ingredients that do not contain gluten are always available.
E-Hall was recently ranked #6 out of 380 colleges for "Best Campus Food" by the Princeton Review. This is the 11th consecutive year that JMU Dining has been ranked in the Top 10. E-Hall also has the distinction of being JMU’s first LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) building.
All VAILL participants and presenters who wish to stay on campus will be assigned a room in the Chesapeake Residence Hall, located directly across from the East Campus Dining Hall and near the Festival Conference and Student Center.
Registration fees include a double occupancy dorm room if requested. When registering you must indicate that you would like a dorm room, otherwise it will be assumed that you have made other lodging arrangements and you will not be assigned a dorm room.
If you select "Yes" to the dormitory room question and you have a specific roommate request, identify that person on the roommate request question. If the person you identify also requests you as a roommate, we will assign both of you the same room. Only mutual roommate requests will be accommodated.
If you do not indicate a specific roommate request, you will be assigned a roommate.
Only those who select the "Single Dorm Room Upgrade" and pay the required fee will be assigned a single dorm room. Please understand that a single dorm room does not come with a private bathroom.
If you have been assigned a dorm room, whether a single or a double, you will receive a room key and an electronic swipe card that permits access to the residence hall and that also doubles as your meal card. Dorm room key recipients are expected to return the key to JMU prior to leaving VAILL. Recipients will be responsible for paying a fee of $20 if the key is lost during VAILL or if the key is not returned to JMU at the end of VAILL. It is not required that the meal card be returned at the end of VAILL. However, if a meal card is lost during the event and a replacement card is issued, the holder is required to pay a replacement fee of $10.
Dormitory Bathroom Facilities
The Chesapeake Residence Hall at JMU does not have private bathroom facilities in each room. On all floors, there are bathrooms at both ends of the hall with multiple individual shower stalls and individual toilets.
If the lack of a private bathroom is a concern, you may want to consider booking a room at a local hotel. See "Hotel Lodging" below.
Each dormitory resident will receive the following linens:
If you require additional pillows, pillow cases, or blankets, please bring these items with you as JMU will not provide extras.
