4. Unexpected Influence: Women Who Helped Shape America's Community Colleges

Between 1960 and 1990, America's "junior colleges" transformed from a small number of transfer-preparation colleges to comprehensive, ubiquitous institutions that serve more undergraduates than any other segment of higher education. Little known are the contributions of the women who left a singular mark on this uniquely American educational institution, especially in leading the inclusion of women, African-Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, and others into the educational landscape. Based upon two years of research, Dr. McCartan will identify these leaders and show how all of higher education benefited from their work.

In this participatory session, we'll have the opportunity to pull back from daily demands, reflect on important goals, and engage in lively conversations with other women about things that matter. The session will also include practical tips for keeping priorities and long-term goals more a part of our daily awareness and decision-making.
