About our University

Virginia Tech was established as Virginia's land-grant institution in 1872. With a student body of more than 31,000 and a faculty of 1,422, it currently serves the state, the nation and the world in the three important fields of teaching and learning, research and discovery, and outreach and engagement. Total research expenditures amount to more than $454 million a year. A 193,000-square-foot facility consisting of The Inn at Virginia Tech, Skelton Conference Center and Holtzman Alumni Center opened in June 2005 and offers innovative technology and warm hospitality.

The university is located in Blacksburg in southwest Virginia, an area noted for its natural beauty, healthful atmosphere and outdoor recreational opportunities. The campus lies on a plateau between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains, 2,100 feet above sea level. Golf and other recreational facilities are available on or near the campus. The Blue Ridge Parkway, Jefferson National Forest and the ciy of Roanoke are all within an hour's drive.
