The 2007 landmark report Rising Above the Gathering Storm brought Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) to the forefront of the nation's educational transformation agenda. Representatives from Virginia's higher education system, K-12 education system, Governor's office, informal education network, industries and businesses have come together to develop and implement this conference. The Governor’s Conference on STEM Education will engage state-wide stakeholders in the creation of a blueprint for Virginia's future success in STEM fields.

The objectives of the conference are:

  • To create a forum that brings together key STEM stakeholders from formal and informal learning environments, government agencies, policymakers, and the corporate sector to advance the conversation initiated by authors of Rising Above the Gathering Storm.

  • To highlight successful efforts across all sectors to showcase the range of opportunities currently available

  • To extract the principles, policies, and practices that have yielded evidence-based success and formulate a monograph that can be shared with all stakeholders

  • To begin the process of creating a statewide blueprint for PK-16 STEM learning both in and out of school

How to get Involved?

Participate
The conference will be held at the Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center in Roanoke, Virginia. A general registration fee of $125 is available until October 19,, 2009. After October 19,, the general registration fee is $175. A student registration fee of $95 remains constant until November 2.

Showcase your successful program
The Governor's Conference for STEM will feature a Marketplace of Ideas. The Marketplace of Ideas will showcase successful programs in STEM implemented across the state. Programs will be selected by steering committee members. More information on the Marketplace of Ideas and submitting a proposal for selection can be found on the Marketplace of Ideas webpage.
