Recognizing that there are few training programs available for the people who operate and manage small waterworks systems in Virginia, Virginia Tech and the Virginia Department of Health have partnered to offer a short course that covers various topics pertinent to the operation and maintenance of Class V and VI waterworks. Among the topics covered are water sources, safety, sample collection and analysis, operation and maintenance, regulations, and record keeping. A session on basic math is also included so that the calculations associated with operating a system can be better understood. For example, operating a small water system might involve calculations associated with pressure or chemical feed rates. The course is rather intense and covers a lot of material over the course of three days. The course begins at 9:30am on the first day and ends after lunch on the third day, to better accommodate the schedules of participants who will travel longer distances. Instructors for the program come from municipalities, VDH, and Virginia Tech, and were selected on the basis of their experience and ratings in other short courses hosted and/or offered by Virginia Tech. Class size will be limited to 25 people.
