Volunteers - FAQ

HOW OLD DO I HAVE TO BE?
At least 16+ years old

WHAT WILL BE EXPECTED OF ME AS A VOLUNTEER?
Volunteers are expected to attend an orientation session, provide service to the festival organizers, and share feedback about their experience. Please see the Volunteer Position Descriptions for more information about specific duties.

WHEN IS ORIENTATION?
Thursday, October 26
Time: 5:00-5:45 PM
Location: Newman Library Multipurpose Room

Wednesday, November 1
Time: 1:30-2:15 PM
Location: Newman Library Multipurpose Room

Friday, November 3
Time: 3:00-3:45 PM
Location: TBA

DO I HAVE TO ATTEND ORIENTATION?
Yes. The orientation session includes important information for volunteering. You may not volunteer for most positions without an orientation session. If you are unable to attend any of the scheduled orientation dates and still would like to volunteer, please contact a Volunteer Coordinator.

WHAT PERKS ARE INCLUDED FOR VOLUNTEERS?
All volunteers of the Virginia Science festival have guaranteed access to attend the various exhibits whenever you’re not working, a t-shirt to show everyone that you are part of the Virginia Science Festival, and experience to enhance your resume or college application. Lunch & snacks are also provided.

HOW LONG IS AN ORIENTATION SESSION?
Each orientation session is 45 minutes.

DO I HAVE TO ATTEND ALL OF THE ORIENTATION SESSIONS?
No, you are only required to attend one orientation session.



ARE VOLUNTEER SHIFTS AVAILABLE?
Yes, each shift is two hours.

WHAT KIND OF TIME COMMITMENT IS REQUIRED OF FESTIVAL VOLUNTEERS?
We ask that volunteers commit to at least 2 hours, although some time commitments may vary according to each volunteer and their needs.

AM I PERMITTED TO EXPLORE THE FESTIVAL?
Yes, you are permitted to explore, but we ask that you do that on your break or after you have finished your shift.

CAN I SIGN-UP MY STUDENT ORGANIZATION?
Absolutely! We encourage you to involve your student organization(s). Each person who will volunteer must be registered & attend orientation.

ONCE I SUBMIT A VOLUNTEER APPLICATION, DO I AUTOMATICALLY BECOME A VOLUNTEER?
Submitting a volunteer application does not guarantee specific volunteer job position. In most cases, you will receive an email from the Volunteer Coordinator within a week to confirm volunteer time and any other necessary information before becoming active. Job assignments are given on the festival day.

ARE VOLUNTEER SHIFTS AVAILABLE?
Yes, we have them in 2-hour shifts.

WHAT IF I’M UNABLE TO VOLUNTEER FOR THE SHIFT & POSITION I SIGNED UP FOR?
Please contact a Volunteer Coordinator as soon as possible and let them know of the update.
