2009 DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE PREVENTION SPEECH CONTEST

Basic Information

Objective:
The Speech Contest is part of Rotary International's continuing effort to promote drug and alcohol abuse prevention. The speech contest is to encourage high school students to: (1) consider the extent and seriousness of the use of mind-modifying drugs including alcohol; (2) learn of current efforts in their community and nation to reduce and prevent drug and alcohol abuse; (3) prepare them to be future leaders in informing their peers of this dangerous problem; and (4) provide an opportunity to speak out against drugs.

Topic of Speech: "What Must Be Done to Prevent Drug and Alcohol Abuse in the US"
Eligible Participants: All high school students.
Local Contest Dates: To be determined by High Schools and local Rotary Club.
District Contest Date: December 11, 2009, 10:30 AM, Virginia Tech
Regional Contest Date: March 20, 2010
Registration Fee: $30 per participant

2. Packet Sent and Project Chairperson Appointed September 2
3. Contact High School Counselor and Interact Club
  1. Explain objective, schedule and awards program.
  2. Recommend first round competition be held at school(s) if more than four students participate.
  3. Inform teachers and students when they will speak at Rotary Club meeting.
September 15
4. Conduct local contest. Project Chairperson:
  1. Arranges for students to speak at club meeting.
  2. Duplicates speech scoring sheets .
  3. Designates Rotarian as timer and judges (six minutes maximum).
  4. Invites local media, parents, and teachers to club meeting.
  5. Presides at speech contest.
October 29
5. Sends names and addresses of student(s) who will be participating in district contest to the district project chairperson. RYLA registration deadline. November 6
6. 10:00 am- Registration December 11
7. 10:30 am- Speech Contest at the IVTSCC December 11
8. Top three winners of District Contest will go to the District Rotary Conference to be held at the Homestead March 20, 2010
9. Three (3) finalists will go to the Regional Contest in Chapel Hill, North Carolina March 2010
