General Information
About this Course
Project management is defined by the Project Management Institute
(PMI®) as "the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques
to project activities to meet the project objectives." The Project
Management Certification preparation course is offered through
Virginia Tech at various locations around Virginia (additional locations coming soon).
This preparation course is a detailed 56-hour program
that provides a foundation in the disciplines and best
practices of professional project management.
The emphasis of the course is to thoroughly prepare students for
the PMI certification exam, including both material in PMI's Guide to
the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) and to
review essential general management topics. The course is complete
with explanations, examples and references to provide insight into
numerous tangential topics.
The program consists of eight consecutive eight-hour Saturday
classes. It systematically follows the path of a project through
initiation, planning, execution, control and closing, encompassing the
39 processes described in the PMBOK Guide. Upon successful
completion, a continuing education certificate for 56 contact hours (5.6 continuing education units) will be awarded.
Course topics covered include:
- Evaluating the financial merits of a proposed project
- Creating a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
- Establishing budget and schedule baselines
- Identifying risks and developing a response plan
- Planning and conducting communications to
project stakeholders
- Creating and executing quality planning
- Turning assigned staff members into a cohesive
project team
- Performance measurement against project baselines
- Managing changes to the project
- Planning and managing procurements
- Ethics and professional responsibilities
PMI's Project Management Professional (PMP) certification was
formally recognized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 1999, giving it worldwide status. Project
management is now "the fastest-growing professional discipline in
North America," according to CMA Management Magazine.
