About this Course
Project management is defined by the Project Management Institute (PMI®) as "the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities to meet the project objectives." The Project Management Certification preparation course is offered through Virginia Tech at various locations around Virginia (additional locations coming soon). This preparation course is a detailed 56-hour program that provides a foundation in the disciplines and best practices of professional project management.

The emphasis of the course is to thoroughly prepare students for the PMI certification exam, including both material in PMI's Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) and to review essential general management topics. The course is complete with explanations, examples and references to provide insight into numerous tangential topics.

The program consists of eight consecutive eight-hour Saturday classes. It systematically follows the path of a project through initiation, planning, execution, control and closing, encompassing the 39 processes described in the PMBOK Guide. Upon successful completion, a continuing education certificate for 56 contact hours (5.6 continuing education units) will be awarded.

PMI's Project Management Professional (PMP) certification was formally recognized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 1999, giving it worldwide status. Project management is now "the fastest-growing professional discipline in North America," according to CMA Management Magazine.
