NCI Charrette Planner® Certificate Training - Updated and Expanded
The NCI Charrette Planner® Certificate training has been revised to
reflect the latest tools and techniques in The Charrette Handbook.
An extra half-day has been added in order to accommodate more meeting
planning and facilitation basics, a new kick-off meeting agenda
exercise, and more stakeholder outreach and engagement tools. To receive
the NCI Charrette Planner® certificate, you must complete both the
half-day Introduction to Dynamic Planning and the two and a half-day
Continuing Dynamic Planning.

Course Content
Introduction to Dynamic Planning (half-day)
This NCI workshop will provide a complete overview of the NCI Dynamic
Planning process. This seminar forms the framework for the Continuing
Dynamic Planning training. Participants include anyone who wants to know
about this powerful collaborative planning process, from elected
officials to planning staff, from developers to concerned citizens.

Continuing Dynamic Planning (two and a half-days)
This course is geared toward public and private planning staff,
development managers and advocacy group staff. This information is
invaluable both for those who hire others to conduct charrettes and for
those who will be conducting charrettes themselves. By the end of the
program you will have practiced the complete process for planning a
charrette. You will gain a practical, working knowledge of the most
advanced tools and techniques used by the leaders of the field.
Depending on your skill and experience level, upon completion of the
course you will be able to host or conduct an NCI Charrette.

NCI Complete Charrette ManagerTM Certificate
Charrettes are dynamic with unique challenges. Charrette managers must
be quick on their feet and have a large toolbox of processes and
skills. The NCI Charrette Management training equips professionals
with the necessary tools for managing large charrettes. This 1.5-day
training is an in-depth study of the most challenging aspects of the
multiple-day charrette.
To receive the NCI Complete Charrette ManagerTM Certificate, you must
fulfill the following three training requirements:
- Introduction to NCI Dynamic Planning .5-day
- Continuing NCI Dynamic Planning 2.5-day
- NCI Charrette Management 1.5-day
NCI Charrette Management
This new course is intended for professionals who will be running
charrettes. Charrettes are dynamic events with unique challenges.
Charrette managers must be quick on their feet and have a large toolbox
of processes and skills. This advanced charrette management training
will equip charrette managers with the essential tools and techniques
required to handle unique, fast paced, and constantly changing,
multiple-day charrettes.

Course Content:
The purpose of this training is to teach the most effective tools and
techniques for managing a multiple-day charrette event. This is an
advanced course for serious planning practitioners.
You will learn to:
- Assemble, schedule, and manage a charrette team
- Design and manage a charrette studio including equipment, layout
and food
- Facilitate design decision-making during a charrette, including
criteria based analysis using OSM (objectives, strategies, and measures)
- Manage the production process including information technology
- Manage the press
Using the Case Study Method, You Will Learn:
Charrette Facilitation:
Meeting Planning and Facilitation Skills: meeting design, room set-up,
kick-off meeting agenda planning exercise, facilitator's preventions,
dealing with difficult people, orchestrating a meeting toward a win/win
outcome.
Hands-on Workshop: learn how to run an interactive public workshop for creating a shared vision.
Charrette Preparation Exercises
Project Mission: write the element of the project mission that will
serve as the guidepost for the project management team
Charrette Products List: develop the list of documents that dictate
the charrette schedule and team make-up.
Stakeholder Analysis and Outreach (newly expanded): learn how to
identify, qualify and connect with the people that will make or break
your project.
Project Complexity Analysis: analyze your project's complexity level
to help you decide the length of the charrette.
Dynamic Planning Roadmap: design an entire project process following
the three phase Dynamic Planning Process
Charrette Ready Plan: develop the complete steps for becoming
"charrette ready" and in doing so answer the question "when can we do
the charrette?"
Charrette Schedule: create a day-by-day schedule for your charrette,
including public meetings, open houses and stakeholder meetings.
Instructor
Bill Lennertz, AIA is NCI's Executive Director. Bill has trained top
staff from federal and local planning agencies and national planning
firms. Bill is a co-author of "The Charrette Handbook," published by the
APA.
