Are you just starting out working with GIS applications?

Or do you simply need to understand GIS capabilities to do your job effectively?

This course provides you with an overview of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) terminology, data requirements, analysis techniques, and GIS output. Participants will also get hands-on experience with basic GIS operations.

INSTRUCTOR
Dr. Tom Sanchez is Associate Professor and Director of the Urban Affairs and Planning Program at Virginia Tech's Alexandria Center. He received his Ph.D. in City Planning from the Georgia Institute of Technology and he has been using and teaching GIS for the past 15 years. His research relies on spatial analysis with support from the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Fannie Mae Foundation, Brookings Institution, and several State Departments of Transportation.

ENROLLMENT LIMIT
Space is limited to 24 participants. Prior courses have been oversubscribed, so early registration is recommended!

SKILL LEVELS NEEDED
Familiarity with Microsoft Windows/Office (especially Excel)

ACCREDITATION AND FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES
This course is eligible for 12 AICP Continuing Professional Development (CPD) units and 1.4 Virginia Tech Continuing Education Units.

Those completing this course will have the opportunity to complete the Planning Academy's Intermediate and Advanced GIS courses over the coming year and earn a GIS certificate.
