SESSION TITLE
Institutional Performance Management: Taking BI To the Next Level
SESSION DESCRIPTION
In September of 2006, Secretary Spellings' Commission on the Future of
Higher Education called for a reformation of higher education by advising
that, "To meet the challenges of the 21st century, higher education must
change from a system primarily based on reputation to one based on
performance." Never before has visibility into higher education's
performance been more critically requested. Across the country four- and
two-year schools are being pressured to improve and openly account for
performance. To response to this call for increased accountability
institutions should begin actively developing Institutional Performance
Management (IPM) solutions to assist leadership with measurable performance
improvement.
Many schools have developed data warehousing solutions to improve speed and
flexibility of reporting and analytics. These solutions often provide great
benefits for IT, IR and staff across campus. Despite this success, most
reporting solutions have had little impact on the executive layer. Many
executives find reports confusing or ineffective. Reports don't address
their most important areas of concern - progress towards institutional
goals and objectives. It is time to take BI to the next level; to move
beyond daily operational reporting. Building upon our success with data
warehousing, the time is right to transform data one more time; into the
context of strategy, goals, objectives and performance indicators. This
presentation outlines one approach to this new and challenging opportunity
to leverage that most valuable asset we call information.
