Presenters
SURESH BABU
Program head of the Learning and Capacity Strengthening (L&CS) Program
and a senior research fellow at IFPRI. He conducts research, outreach
and capacity strengthening activities in the areas of global food and
nutrition security. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D in Economics at Iowa
State University. Before joining IFPRI, he was a Research Economist at
Cornell University, Senior Food Policy Advisor to the Malawi Ministry of
Agriculture; an Evaluation Economist for the UNICEF-Malawi; Coordinator
of UNICEF/IFPRI food security program in Malawi; and a Senior Lecturer
at the Bunda College of Agriculture, Malawi.

RICHARD BAWDEN AM PHD FRSA
Richard Bawden's current research interests lie in the application of
systems principles to the process of development in its broadest
context, with a particular focus on the engagement of universities with
civil society in pursuit of 'systemic development'. He holds the
degrees of B.Sc. (Agric) Hons. from London University, and PhD (in the
field of animal parasitology) from the University of Queensland. The
first ten years of his academic career (1968 - 1978), which followed on
from two years in commercial pharmaceutical research in England, were
spent at the University of New England in Australia which culminated in
his election as Dean of the Faculty of Rural Science. From 1978 to
1993 he was Dean of Agriculture and Rural Development at Hawkesbury
Agricultural College in Australia. When Hawkesbury was incorporated
into the University of Western Sydney in 1988, he was also appointed as
the foundation Professor of Systemic Development. Following his
retirement from the deanship he was appointed the foundation Director
of the Centre for Systemic Development at the same institution. In
1999, following his retirement from the University of Western Sydney as
a professor emeritus, he was appointed Visiting Distinguished
University Professor at Michigan State University - a post he continues
to hold (2005).
He has been a Visiting Scholar/Professor at the Open University in
England, the University of Natal in South Africa, Tamil Nadu
Agricultural University in India, and Michigan State, Rutgers, and
Cornell Universities in the USA. In addition to a two-year post with
FAO as an 'animal health expert' in Uruguay during the mid 1970s, he
has also been an occasional consultant to systemic development projects
in more than a dozen countries across five continents, working with
such international development agencies as The World Bank, The Asian
Development Bank, FAO/UNDP, UNESCO, the Ford and Kellogg Development
Foundations, and the international development agencies of Australia
and the United States of America. He has published more than 200
journal articles, book chapters, and conference keynote papers.
He is a member of the editorial boards of four international journals
and a member of three international advisory boards for development
initiatives in universities in the Netherlands and South Africa.
In addition to his academic posts, Professor Bawden is a foundation
director of the Global Business Network Australia and of the Systemic
Development Institute, and is a senior partner and director of the
consulting agency Systemic Development Associates in Australia. He has
been a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts,
Manufactures and Commerce (FRSA) since 1990 and on Australia Day 2000
he was appointed to Membership of the Order of Australia (AM) in
recognition of his national and international work in systemic
development.

ROSEMARY R. HAGGETT
Dr. Rosemary R. Haggett is the Director of the Division of Undergraduate
Education at the National Science Foundation. Prior, she was the
Associate Provost for Academic Programs at West Virginia University,
where she continues to hold the rank of Professor in the Division of
Animal and Veterinary Sciences. As Associate Provost, Dr. Haggett had
general oversight of the undergraduate and graduate academic programs of
the university as well as the Honors Program, the Office of Service
Learning, and the Undergraduate Academic Services Center. She co-chaired
the WVU Assessment Council and has published in the area of student
learning outcome assessment.
From 1994-1999, Dr. Haggett was the Dean of the College of Agriculture,
Forestry and Consumer Sciences at West Virginia University, one of the
first woman agriculture deans in the country. She was also the Director
of the West Virginia Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station.
Prior to joining West Virginia University, Dr. Haggett was a Division
Director in the National Research Initiative and the Deputy Associate
Administrator of the Office of Grants and Program Systems in the US
Department of Agriculture. She has also been a faculty member at Loyola
University of Chicago.
Dr. Haggett holds a BA degree in Biology from the University of
Bridgeport and a PhD in Physiology from the University of Virginia. She
did postdoctoral work in reproductive biology at Northwestern
University. She is the recipient of the West Virginia Women's Commission
"Celebrate Women Award" in the education category and the Irving Award
from ADEC.
HIRAM LAREW
Hiram Larew is Director of International Programs in USDA's Cooperative
State Research, Education and Extension Service. As such, he helps
oversee many of USDA's international programs that are implemented in
close collaboration with land-grant colleges and universities. Those
programs have included agricultural marketing programs Africa, Central
and Eastern Europe, and Central America. Dr. Larew also works closely
with U.S. colleges and universities as they globalize their campus
programs in agriculture and related fields. Before moving to USDA, he
served as the US Agency for International Development's liaison to the
U.S. higher education community. He began his career studying insects
at USDA's Agricultural Research Service in Beltsville, Maryland.
ROBERT PATTERSON
Robert Patterson is Senior Liaison Officer of the North American
Liaison Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United
Nations (FAO). Based in Washington D.C. since early 1998, Mr.
Patterson coordinates FAO's activities in the North American region
with respect to the private and non-governmental sectors. He also is
responsible for FAO's public outreach, generating interest and action
relating to the promotion of sustainable food production and solutions
to hunger.
Mr. Patterson has been with FAO/UN since 1980, filling assignments on
four continents and in over 22 countries. He is on the Advisory Board
of the American Horticultural Society and the Programming Board for
COPIA.
Mr. Patterson holds an M.A. from the School of International Affairs in
Ottawa, and a B.A. from the University of Guelph, in Canada. He was
raised on a dairy/alfalfa farm in western Quebec, but of late has
rarely tugged an udder.
BARI RABIN
Bari Rabin is currently a Knowledge Management Officer with the Latin
America and Caribbean (LAC) Region of the World Bank. She was part of a
small team which established the Global Development Learning Network's
LAC affiliation, bringing in university partners and public sector
support, and working with them to define the operational and growth
strategies for what is five years later a dynamic, 'partner-owned'
network. Ms. Rabin is responsible for program management within the
GDLN in several thematic areas, most recently inaugurating the Ed Rural
Alliance, a partnership in capacity building and dialogue for the rural
space. She provides knowledge sharing advisory services to World Bank
operational teams and works with them to design and facilitate learning
events conducted via video conferencing. She particularly enjoys
partnership development and group facilitation. Ms. Rabin holds an M.A.
in International Development from The George Washington University which
she earned after spending several years in Costa Rica, working in the
field of education.
VALERIE RHOE
Valerie Rhoe is a research analyst in the Learning and Capacity
Strengthening (L&CS) Program of the International Food Policy Research
Institute (IPFRI). Her work focuses on strengthening the capacity of
developing-country institutions to undertake food, agriculture, and
nutrition policy analysis. She currently conducts research on issues
related to food security, rural poverty, sustainability of natural
resource use, and capacity strengthening. She also undertakes capacity
strengthening activities related to food and nutrition security. She
earned a bachelor's degree in sociology and economics from Moravian
College and her master's degree in economics from the University of
Notre Dame.
DAVID J. SAMMONS
Dr. Sammons is presently on leave from Purdue University working with
USAID/Washington for a one to two year period. During his leave, he is
working as "Senior Advisor for University Relations and Agricultural
Research, Training and Outreach" in the Office of Agriculture at the
Agency. In this role, Dr. Sammons is responsible for providing a
"bridge" between the university community and USAID with special
attention to issues and concerns that inform the partnership. At
Purdue, he is Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture and Director
of the Office of International Programs in Agriculture. Dr. Sammons'
office provides administrative leadership and support for international
activities in the teaching, research, and outreach mission areas of the
College. Previous to moving to Purdue, Dr. Sammons was employed for 15
years (1978 to 1993) at the University of Maryland as Professor of
Agronomy with responsibilities in small grain (wheat, barley) breeding.
He has a wide range of international experiences, first as a Peace
Corps volunteer in the Philippines (1968-70), and in recent years in
short term consultant positions with USAID in West Africa (Gambia,
Senegal) in the area of crop loss assessment, in Egypt and Sudan in
agricultural curriculum development, and as a Fulbright Senior
Fellow/Lecturer at Egerton University in Kenya. He has also acquired
professional experience internationally in the Caribbean, Honduras,
Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina,
southeast Asia (Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam), Japan, China, Russia,
Ukraine, Afghanistan, West Africa (Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Mali,
Niger), Zimbabwe, Angola, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Egypt, Morocco,
Tunisia, Qatar, Jordan, Syria, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Ireland,
France, and The Netherlands. He is the author of over 170 scientific
articles and seven books and/or book chapters. In 2001, Dr. Sammons was
elected a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy.
VERIAN D. THOMAS
Serves as the Associate Dean for Academic Programs,
in the College of Engineering Sciences, Technology,
and Agriculture at Florida A&M University
Dr. Verian D. Thomas has more than 25 years of research, college
teaching, and administrative experiences. She has taught chemistry,
nutrition, and food science courses. Dr. Thomas has obtained
significant resources from federal agencies and private industry for
improving the quality of undergraduate and graduate programs in the food
and agricultural sciences. Her love for teaching and desire to share
her knowledge with others have led her to also receive funding for
summer high school teachers' workshops and middle and high school summer
intern programs.
JOACHIM VON BRAUN
Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute
(IFPRI) based in Washington, DC, U.S.A. Before that he was Director at
the Center for Development Research and Head of the Center's Department
of Economics and Technological Change at University of Bonn, Germany.
He received his doctoral (1978) and professorial title (1983) in
agricultural economics from the University of Goettingen, Germany. He
held the Chair for Food Economics, Food Policy, and World Food Issues at
the University of Kiel, Germany.
Von Braun serves on boards of publishers of several journals, as well as
several international advisory boards of research and policy
organizations, and is member of the Academy of Sciences of the State of
Northrhine Westphalia, Germany.
His research addresses international development economics topics;
policy issues of trade, aid, health, and nutrition; and a range of
agricultural economics research issues.
