Foundations in Association Management is the first course in a series offered by Virginia Tech's Outreach Program Development in the National Capital Region in partnership with Virginia Tech's Institute for Policy and Governance.

All courses in the series are:

  • tailored to specific knowledge and skills for association management
  • designed to provide CEU's* to meet certification requirements for association professionals
  • located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria and metro accessible
  • scheduled to be convenient for working professionals

Courses may be taken individually or as a Certificate series. A Certificate in Association Management will be awarded upon successful completion of 10 CEUs*, including the Foundations of Association Management and two current Topics in Association Management courses. Courses will be scheduled to allow participants to complete the Certificate requirements within 12 months.

*These courses award Continuing Education Units which can count toward the Continuing Education Requirements needed to qualify for ASAE's Certified Association Executive program.

Spring 2008

Foundations of Association Management: This course covers the fundamental concepts and principles of association management. It is relevant to any association employee, or anyone interested in working in the association field. Topics include the history of associations and their role in society, management skills, marketing and membership, program and conference planning, advocacy, and strategic planning.

  • Governance and Structure
  • Public Policy, Government, and External Relations
  • Membership
  • Programs, Products, and Services
  • Public Relations and External Communications


LOCATION
Old Town Alexandria, metro accessible The course will be offered at Virginia Tech's Alexandria campus in Old Town, at Prince and Henry Streets, just 10 blocks from the King Street Metro.

REGISTRATION
Registration cost is $2,275 which includes light catered meals on site for evening and day sessions and AM and PM breaks during the all-day sessions.

Fall 2008 and Winter 2009

Topics in Association Management: These courses will closely examine individual aspects of association management. Offerings vary by term and may include such topics as Advocacy and Ethics, Leadership Skills, Marketing and Strategic Positioning, and Education Programming. Prerequisite: "Foundations of Association Management" or instructor's approval. Inquire for details.
