*The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research
The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) is a catalyst for
economic and community transformation through strategic research, advanced
learning programs, advanced technology, and community outreach. Strategic
research centers, ranging from motorsports engineering to unmanned systems
and robotics, are located at the IALR. From these centers flow academic
programs in both the undergraduate and graduate arenas through IALR's
academic partners, Virginia Tech, Averett University, and Danville
Community College.
The Institute's state-of-the-art facility represents the tangible presence
of high-technology in Southside and was designed to emphasize imagination
and dreams. Virginia Tech's partnership with the Virginia Tobacco
Commission, community and business leaders in Southside, and the subsequent
establishment of the IALR, that came as a result of that partnership, was
recently honored with the 2007 C. Peter Magrath Community Engagement Award
presented by the National Association of STate Universities and Land-Grant
Colleges (NASULGC).
