Julie J. Brown joined the Institute in the fall of 2005 and served as the Coordinator of Student Services and the Manager of Advanced Learning. Currently, she serves as the Director of Academic and Outreach Programs and in this role supports the IALR mission to provide talent development programming aligned with the research center areas of focus, predominantly in STEM education. Brown has seven years of experience in higher education, working for a public research university and two community colleges. She served as the Danville site director for Old Dominion University's Teletechnet program for two years and also spent 2 -1/2 years directing a federal TRIO program at Danville Community College. Brown also served as an administrative Dean for an off-campus community college site in North Carolina. Prior to her higher education involvement, Brown spent six years with the regional Governor's School in Danville, teaching environmental science and international studies courses. She has extensive experience in federal grant reporting, program development, and fiscal accountability.

Brown graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in Environmental Science and received her M.S. in Environmental Studies from Longwood University. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Community College Leadership through Old Dominion University.
