Community Water Fluoridation (CWF) benefits children and adults for 95% of the Virginia population receiving service from public water systems. Virginia has been recognized by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for surpassing the Healthy People 2010/2020 goals for fluoridation. Dental disease remains the most common chronic disease of childhood. The CDC has named CWF one of the top ten public health achievements of the twentieth century.
The CDC states that for every dollar invested in community water fluoridation, $38 is avoided in dental treatment cost. Fluoridation can be provided to an individual for a lifetime for the national approximate cost of an amalgam filling of $65. The American Dental Association and the CDC estimate the average annual cost of fluoridation as approximately $.50 per person. Water Fluoridation is a safe, effective and cost-saving preventive health measure that reaches the total community. CWF is the adjustment of the natural concentrations of fluoride in the water to the optimal level needed to reduce dental decay.
