College Bound (CB) is pleased to extend an invitation to education and rehabilitation professionals serving middle and high school students with disabilities from across Virginia to attend College Bound, June 18-20, 2008, on the Virginia Tech campus. Established in 1999, College Bound promotes and supports the success of students with disabilities in higher education. Since the addition of the Professional Track in 2006, we have welcomed education and transition professionals from across the state of Virginia, including special education teachers, instructional assistants, transition specialists, guidance counselors, rehabilitation counselors and high school administrators.

We are planning a dynamic Professional Track for College Bound 2008 that will integrate the best parts of College Bound with sessions that are designed specifically for professionals. Sessions include information and resources related to:

Discussion Group
  • IDEA to ADA
  • College support services
  • Transition curriculum
  • Assistive technologies
  • Self determination & student involvement
  • College disability supports & accommodations
  • Organization & study skills
  • Strategies from successful college students
  • Networking with parents

Participants revealed the most valuable highlights of College Bound included:

  • Understanding rights & responsibilities
  • Interaction with college leaders with disabilities
  • Exploring transition curriculum, strategies & assistive technology
  • Developing professional networks

As a result of the program, professionals reported that they left with a better understanding of how to help their students create a more positive post school vision by using college support services, assistive technologies, effective organization, study and independent living skills, as well as self advocacy and self determination.

Professionals participate in workshops and activities in parallel sessions with high school students with disabilities and their parents and/or guardians. One of the highlights for all is watching high school students demonstrate the knowledge, confidence, and advocacy skills acquired through interactions with successful college students with disabilities and staff.
