AEESP Town Hall Meeting: How the NSF-Sponsored WATERS Network Can Enhance Your Research Opportunities and Enrich Your Students' Educational Experience

Monday, July 30th, 2007
7:00 - 8:00 p.m.

The WATERS Network (WATer and Environmental Research Systems Network) is a proposed integrated real-time observing system that will consist of geographically-distributed infrastructure, deploying state-of-the-art environmental sensors and information technologies to transform our scientific understanding of the chemical, biophysical and social processes affecting water across multiple scales. The WATERS Network design is a collaborative effort between NSF's Engineering Directorate (the Environmental Engineering Community) and the Geosciences Directorate (the Hydrologic Sciences Community).

This national platform will dramatically improve our ability to forecast the state of our water resources, leading towards improved management of this critical resource. It will revolutionize the way we perform environmental research and educate future scientists and engineers through interdisciplinary engagement on critical water problems by understanding human interactions with water and the natural, managed and built environment.

This town hall meeting will serve the dual purpose of helping environmental engineers and scientists understand how the WATERS Network can enhance their research and curricula development, as well as soliciting input from the environmental engineering and science communities on the key challenges the network seeks to address, including deployment of the proposed infrastructure.

Following presentations on the current status of key components of the WATERS Network, beginning with an introductory WATERS Network Vision by Dr. Patrick L. Brezonik, NSF's Environmental Engineering Program Director, the speakers and additional panelists will participate in a question and answer session with meeting attendees. Refreshments will be served.
