Refining Our Mission: Continuing Education’s Role
Welcome from the PresidentOn behalf of the Association for Continuing Higher Education, welcome to Roanoke and our 69th Annual Conference and Meeting. Assembled for your professional development are three of the most rewarding days you will ever experience. The program and local arrangements committees have been working for several years to construct a conference that will inspire and perhaps alter your basic understanding of continuing higher education. We will shake-up old beliefs and traditions while discussing new ways to address the lifelong learning needs of our local, state and national contingencies. We will debate continuing higher education's vital role in helping colleges and universities redefine their engagement, outreach, and public service missions. In doing so, we envision and create new opportunities for helping higher education address the most pressing issues facing our nation today. This year's gathering may be one of the most significant for our association. To reflect an emphasis on professional development, the ACHE Board of Directors added the title CONFERENCE to our annual meeting. So this year may be our 69th Annual Meeting, but it's officially our first ANNUAL CONFERENCE. In addition, the basic structure has been changed to facilitate more opportunities for dining together and participating in one of the most basic values of our association: professional development through networking. We will also end our conference with a celebration of our new geographically named regions. The 69th gathering of the Association for Continuing Higher Education will take on historic proportions as we assemble in one of our nation's most historic cities.
Welcome to Roanoke!
Welcome from the Program Chair and the Conference ChairWelcome to Roanoke and the 69th Annual Conference of the Association for Continuing Higher Education (ACHE). Continuing education has always played a unique role in serving our communities, our regions, our states and the nation. We have gathered for these three days around the theme "Refining Our Mission: Continuing Education's Role in Engagement, Outreach and Public Service." During your time here you will have the opportunity to participate in sessions relating to outreach, partnerships and public service. Forty concurrent sessions are available for you to choose from whether you are an experienced continuing education professional or newly immersed in the field. Our keynoters will provide you with three perspectives on the theme of outreach, engagement and public service. This year we are offering two new value added workshops to deepen your knowledge. And your interactions with colleagues will fill out your professional development experience. A conference of this size and depth is always the work of many dedicated colleagues. Two deserve special notice; Sandra Gladney from the University of Oregon who organized the concurrent sessions and Susan Elkins from Tennessee Tech University who recruited our keynote speakers. Our thanks go to them and all the others who worked hard to bring this conference to you. Enjoy the conference. We made it for you.
